Global accolade for Teesside University

06 June 2018

Teesside University has been included amongst the world’s best young universities according to prestigious global rankings published today (Wednesday June 6).

The Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings 2018 provides a comprehensive list of the world’s best universities that are aged 50 years or under.

The rankings were revealed at the Young Universities Summit in Tampa, Florida today and include 250 institutions from 55 countries world-wide.

Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Teesside University, Professor Paul Croney, said: 'Our inclusion in the THE Young University Rankings is a significant achievement and is a great source of pride to the whole University community and the wider region.

'Teesside University’s vision is to be an internationally-renowned institution with a reputation for academic excellence. We are committed to providing an outstanding student and learning experience and this latest accolade is recognition of all the tremendous work being undertaken at Teesside to transform our university.'

The THE Young University Rankings is a comprehensive, balanced and trusted resource, with young universities measured across a range of strict criteria, including teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income. This is the first time Teesside University has been featured in the prestigious rankings and is placed at 151-200.

Dr David Bell, Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) at Teesside University, said: 'It is extremely gratifying to see such a consistent upward trend for Teesside University across a wide range of performance indicators.

We are committed to providing an outstanding student and learning experience and this latest accolade is recognition of all the tremendous work being undertaken at Teesside to transform our university.

'We have invested heavily in our offer to students and will continue to work to ensure that Teesside remains a positive choice for students from all over the world.'

Professor Croney added: 'These rankings are a vital resource trusted by academics, students, their families, industry and governments globally.

'For Teesside University to be included is a tremendous accolade and shows how far we have come as an academic institution in a relatively short period of time.'

This latest recognition builds on Teesside University’s growing reputation, nationally and internationally. Just last week, Teesside moved up 11 places in the 2019 Guardian University Guide league table and is now ranked joint 68th out of 121 institutions.

Originally founded as Constantine College in 1930 and then a polytechnic in 1969, Teesside became a university in 1992. It has continued to grow and has won a number of major accolades. Teesside University has also unveiled its ambitious Campus Masterplan, which will see £300m invested over the next 10 years to completely transform the campus and further improve the student experience.
