After receiving orthodontic treatment as a teenager, Hannah Storey discovered her own passion for dental care.

The former Cockermouth School pupil initially trained as a dental nurse at Teesside University before working for a year in the role. She later returned to study BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Therapy to progress her career further within dentistry.

Hannah said: 'My initial interest in a dental career arose from my personal experiences. I required orthodontic treatment when I was younger and I then realised that I would enjoy the demands of a hands-on occupation.

'I worked as a dental nurse, but I wanted to progress further. I wanted to acquire new skills that would enable me to be on the other side of the dental chair, communicating directly with patients, so I decided to pursue a career as a Dental Hygienist and Therapist,' she added.

After seeing the facilities on offer, Hannah, 24, chose to study at Teesside University because she valued the practical skills she could gain through the course.

She said: 'I attended open days at universities across the country but I decided on Teesside due to their state-of-the-art phantom head skills lab and student dental facility. The lab is a simulated clinical environment that prepares you well for placement.

I wanted to acquire new skills that would enable me to be on the other side of the dental chair, communicating directly with patients, so I decided to pursue a career as a Dental Hygienist and Therapist.

'Practical skills are pivotal within dentistry and I knew that Teesside would provide a good balance of both theory and practice. The work placements helped me to really develop my skills as a clinician.'

Programme Leader for BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Therapy Harriet Boyd has enjoyed seeing Hannah progress during her time at Teesside.

Harriet said: 'Hannah has been an excellent student throughout her programme – since she first started with us as a student dental nurse we have seen her develop into an excellent and confident clinician.'

Hannah has already accepted a full-time role at a practice in the Lake District and she is looking forward to starting her new career.

She added: 'I would highly recommend the University and my course – without my degree, it is unlikely I would be able to do the job that I love.

'The staff involved in teaching the course are very supportive and knowledgeable. I will be forever grateful to Karyn Richardson, a fantastic lecturer and personal tutor. I’m thankful for the knowledge she passed on to me which I will continue to use within my own dental career.'
