Agreement signed between Teesside University and Fife College

15 January 2019

Teesside University has widened opportunities for students north of the border who want to study towards a degree in engineering thanks to a new partnership agreement.

Teesside University and Fife College have signed an admissions agreement which will enable Fife College students/graduates from Engineering Programmes to progress to the third and final year of BEng Tech (Hons) Petroleum and Gas Engineering (Top-up) at Teesside University.

The agreement gives students the chance to achieve an Honours degree in three years via the English system rather than the traditional four in Scotland.

Students and graduates of either HND Petroleum Engineering or HND Mechanical Engineering will be able to take the opportunity by completing two bridging modules after their College studies.

The two modules will provide students with the sufficient credits required for direct entry into Teesside’s BEng Tech Petroleum and Gas programme.

The agreement builds on the previous arrangement, which gave students the chance to enter the third year of the BEng Tech (Hons) degree.

Iain Hawker, Assistant Principal: Quality and Academic Partnerships at Fife College, said: ‘We very much value our partnership with Teesside University and are very pleased to have signed this new articulation agreement. It offers our engineering students a fantastic route if they wish to continue their studies from an HND to an Honours Degree with only one year of study at the university.

‘Our previous arrangement has already seen former Fife College graduates who have gone on to study at Teesside progress to study MSc courses, or go on to find great jobs within the industry.

The students are hardworking and dedicated, with a great deal of knowledge in the field of oil and gas engineering.

‘This new agreement will further widen access for students while also representing another exciting step forward for our degree links programme. We look forward to continuing to work with Teesside University to benefit our students.’

Dr Tannaz Pak, Senior Lecturer in Petroleum Engineering and the Course Leader for the BEng Tech Petroleum and Gas Engineering at Teesside University, said: ‘We have worked with Fife College graduates for a number of years. They are hardworking and dedicated, with a great deal of knowledge in the field of oil and gas engineering.

'These students have demonstrated the Fife-Teesside arrangement covered in our new agreement is an effective way of achieving an engineering degree, saving the students one year, as well as giving them the opportunity to experience studying away from home. We hope that this new agreement can benefit those Fife graduates who choose to study towards an undergraduate degree.'

As part of the partnership Fife College HND Petroleum Engineering students visit Teesside University during their course.

Following submitting a UCAS application, the students are contacted by Teesside University to guide them through the process for enrolling on the bridging modules that are part of the conditions of the offer.

The two bridging modules, which are studied online as part of the University’s winter/summer programmes, are on the subjects of Safety Engineering and Petroleum Processing Engineering.
