Sharon sets new record

04 August 2019

Ultra-distance runner and Teesside University lecturer Sharon Gayter has set a new record running from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

Sharon started her record breaking run on Sunday 21 July, setting the new record by completing the 822 miles in 12 days, 11 hours and 7 seconds, reaching her destination on Friday 2 August.

The previous record, set in 2008 and run from Land's End to John O'Groats, was more than four hours longer.

Sharon, 55, a lecturer at Teesside University Business School, said: 'I wanted to break the record by as much as I could and push to my limits because you never know what's round the corner, like road closures.'

Sharon, who was raising money for MIND during the run, said sleep deprivation was her biggest battle during the run, adding the final day was 'painful' after just 90 minutes of sleep, with her averaging around just three hours of sleep during her challenge.

She added: 'I had been planning this for two years and had a brilliant crew involved who cycled with me and logged all the required data for Guinness World Records and collect witness statements.'

Last year Sharon completed ten marathons in ten consecutive days on a treadmill, setting a new world record of 43 hours, 51 minutes and 39 seconds. It was the third world record she has set at Teesside University.

In 2011 she broke both the men’s and women’s world records for the most distance covered on a treadmill in seven consecutive days – a record that is yet to be beaten. She also set the record for the furthest distance on a treadmill in 12 hours.
