National recognition for digital platform showcasing student work

21 October 2019

Teesside University’s digital media platform TU-Xtra has been shortlisted for a prestigious national student radio award.

TU-Xtra showcases live news, radio, television and digital broadcast content produced by media and journalism students from the University’s School of Computing, Engineering & Digital Technologies.

The platform has been shortlisted for Best Station Branding in this year’s Student Radio Awards, supported by BBC Radio 1 and Global Radio.

TU-Xtra offers a unique learning and teaching platform for Teesside University students. It was developed to enhance students’ multi-media journalism and broadcast production skills, while also providing an online news and entertainment platform for the wider-University community.

The students work in cutting-edge television studios, radio studios and multi-media news room environments at the University, with facilities all replicating current industry practice. The content produced for TU-Xtra can be showcased by students through a digital portfolio which forms part of their course assessment.

Andy Munns, who graduated from the BA (Hons) Broadcast Media Production earlier this year, said: 'I’m extremely proud to have been involved with student radio during my time at Teesside University. I was involved in a project during my second year to rebrand the station and integrate it with output from journalism and media production students.

'It was an exciting project to work on and one that helped me to develop new skills and enhance existing ones. It's great to have recognition for a project that we as a team worked so hard on.'

It is wonderful that TU-Xtra, along with what we are doing across media and journalism here at Teesside, is being recognised by key industry players

Dominic Dunn, Technical Director in the University’s School of Computing, Engineering Digital Technologies

Dominic Dunn, Technical Director in the University’s School of Computing, Engineering Digital Technologies, said: 'The TU-Xtra digital platform, which launched little over a year ago, was realised thanks to the collaboration between staff, graduate interns and current students who all worked closely to develop and produce a digital platform that replicated current industry practice.

'It is wonderful that TU-Xtra, along with what we are doing across media and journalism here at Teesside, is being recognised by key industry players. It endorses what our programmes are about in providing real-world experience and opportunities for students studying with us.'

Student station manager and BA (Hons) Film and Television Production student, Catherine Roys said: 'The nomination for the Best Branding is a huge step for the station, having only rebranded as TU-Xtra last year. The students are very pleased that the time and effort they put into building the station brand has paid off.'

The Student Radio Awards, held annually at the O2 in London, celebrate the best student media talent across the country and is supported and judged by industry professionals across BBC Radio and Global Radio. A Teesside University team of students and staff will attend the awards on Thursday 7 November.
