Digital studio helps to share road safety message

28 October 2019

A special film to educate youngsters about road safety has been developed through a project involving Teesside University’s TUCan digital studio.

The TUCan team worked on the project with RoadPeace, the national charity for road crash victims. The film was launched at the charity’s annual service of remembrance for road crash victims, held this year at Durham Cathedral.

RoadPeace will use the film, which incorporates a virtual reality experience, in classrooms across the country to help to educate young people about road safety.

The film follows a group of children as they walk home from school and the impact of a young girl being distracted by her mobile phone. The narration includes the voices of two people who have lost loved ones.

Mark Ellis, of RoadPeace North East, said: 'Our members have put so much energy into what is such an emotive short film. The strength of this film is the rawness that it brings to the viewer. It is a film which will cause all viewers to sit silently and reflect.'

Siobhan Fenton, Associate Dean (Enterprise and Business Engagement), in the University’s School of Computing, Engineering & Digital Technologies, said: 'Our digital studio is committed to providing bespoke solutions across a range of sectors and we have been proud to support RoadPeace North East and their initiative to raise awareness surrounding the critical issues of road safety.'

The TUCan digital studio team filmed the project, co-ordinating with RoadPeace North East, Cleveland Police Special Constabulary, Cliff Theatre theatre group, Ian Ramsey CE Academy in Stockton, North East Ambulance Service, Teesside Park and Thompsons Solicitors.

TUCan brings together graduates, academic staff, researchers and students to work on a range of digital projects for and with the University’s external partners. The digital studio, which provides bespoke digital productions and solutions to a range of sectors across film, animation, VR/AR, games and web production, is holding a launch event on Thursday 14 November to showcase its services.
