National recognition for sports therapy graduate

17 December 2019

Achievements during his sport rehabilitation studies have earned national recognition for Teesside University graduate Tom Wing.

Tom graduated from the BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation degree earlier this year and is due to start the MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-registration) in January.

He has now been recognised for attaining the highest mark nationally among sport rehabilitation students completing a degree accredited by the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators (BASRaT).

Tom was invited to Birmingham to attend the BASRaT annual general meeting to receive the Graybrook award for achieving the highest marks on a BASRaT undergraduate degree.

He said: 'The award was for achieving the highest overall percentage grade across the country. I really enjoyed the degree and the opportunities it offered, which included working as a strength and conditioning intern, student researcher and Chairman of the Sports Science and Medicine Society.

'The combination of both the degree and extracurricular opportunities were equally important to my academic success and I feel have enhanced my employability.'

Tom currently works as a strength and conditioning coach for the University’s women’s football team, along with elite training programme BOSSS (Borough of Stockton Swim Scheme), as well as a sport rehabilitator for York City Football Club and the University’s Girl's Regional Talent Club.

He also volunteers as a Strength and Conditioning and Sports Therapist with Middlesbrough FC Ladies and runs his own business Teesside Athletic Academy, which offers strength and conditioning, injury management and rehabilitation support.

Tom added: 'I chose to study at Teesside as it is my local university and more importantly, I was impressed by the experience which the academic and support staff all have. So many of them have had a positive impact on me and my studies. There is a tremendous sense of community and support at Teesside University.'

Paul Chesterton, Teaching Fellow in the Department of Physiotherapy, Sports Rehabilitation, Dietetics and Leadership in the University’s School of Health & Life Sciences, said: 'We are really proud of Tom's achievement. It is a testament to his hard work, commitment and motivation to succeed in his studies.

'Tom has set an example to all our students and we congratulate him on a tremendous achievement.'

Teesside University is one of just 16 institutions which offer BASRaT accredited undergraduate degree courses. Programmes which gain BASRaT accreditation have demonstrated that the course includes the required module content and is suitably established to enable them to produce graduate sport rehabilitators.
