Emily named among industry’s rising stars

A Teesside University civil engineering apprentice has been named in a list of 30 rising stars in the freight and logistics industry.

Multimodal and Freight Business Journal joined forces to showcase 30 Under 30 with the aim of celebrating the next generation of industry leaders who have gone that extra mile and deserve their hard work to be recognised.

Among those listed in the 30 rising stars is Emily Clark, who is completing a degree apprenticeship in Civil Engineering at Teesside University while working at PD Ports.

Emily, 20, from, Stockton, said: 'I spend four days a week working at PD Ports in the civil engineering team where we manage lots of different scales of projects and maintenance work.

'I was offered the degree apprenticeship after spending four weeks at PD Ports Engineering Department through Career Ready and the Logistics Academy. Completing the degree apprenticeship in civil engineering means I will eventually work towards a Masters in Civil Engineering.'

Emily added: 'Some of the lovely people at my company nominated some of the staff from PD Ports to be considered and I was very kindly included, the list of people from all different companies was then reduced down to 30 by the judges.

'I was absolutely over the moon when I found out I had been listed in the Multimodal 30 under 30. I’m really passionate about getting young people into both civil engineering and the logistics industry and I think this list helps inspire young people into that.

'My aim is to become a chartered civil engineer and continue working at PD Ports gaining experience of the civil engineering and logistics fields. I would love to progress to management level as I really enjoy working with people and managing teams.'

Emily added: 'Teesside is one of the best places to go for a degree apprenticeship as their courses are specifically tailored to awarding bodies such as the Institution of Civil Engineers, this is so important when you are aiming to become professionally Chartered.'

Cheryl McMahon, Apprenticeship Manager in the University’s School of Computing, Engineering & Digital Technologies, said: 'This is an amazing accolade for Emily.'

Neil Dalus, Group Engineering Manager (Civil) at PD Ports, said: 'We are all delighted with the progress Emily has made within our industry, business and our engineering function in such a short time. Her success is also an obvious reflection on the degree apprenticeship route, the civil engineering profession and the support of the Institution of Civil Engineers.'
