Middlesbrough-based games developer Double Eleven was so impressed with the quality of work from the nine students that they offered them all permanent jobs either starting immediately or once they have completed their studies.

Double Eleven, which has co-developed a number of best-selling games including Prison Architect, Minecraft Dungeons, Lego Harry Potter, Goat Simulator and more recently Rust: Console Edition, has been accepting student placements from the University’s School of Computing, Engineering & Digital Technologies since 2017.

This developed into a partnership in 2019 with a memorandum of understanding signed between the two organisations, pledging to work together to encourage and develop collaborative activities.

The nine students taking part in the placements were studying degrees in a range of disciplines including Computer Games Design, Computer Games Art, Computer Games Programming, Animation and Computer Science.

In the last 12 months, Double Eleven has undergone a rapid expansion, more than doubling its workforce, and opened a new studio in Malaysia in January 2020. The nine students were taken on as part of this expansion.

Jo Potts, Recruitment Manager at Double Eleven, said: “We’re huge believers in supporting the local community and want to work in partnership to grow the skillset which is available in the North East.

We have given students on placements jobs before, but this is by far the biggest from a single cohort. The quality of work that they demonstrated was phenomenal.

“We’re very keen to continue and grow our collaboration with Teesside University. The University has shown itself to be very open to collaborating and connecting with industry.

“We recruit from all over the country (and the world) and our entry level roles are highly sought after.

Claire Barker, Work Experience Officer at Teesside University, said: “There is a lot of competition for roles within the games industry, so we’re delighted that nine of our students will be gaining full-time employment with such a prestigious company straight after graduation.

“Part of our mission at Teesside University is to ensure that our students are job ready so they can make an immediate impact in the workplace.

“Partnerships such as this help our students gain vital industry skills working on live projects, while allowing employers to feed into our curriculum to ensure that we are teaching the skills that businesses want.”
