Professor Michael Short has been named on the inaugural Net Zero 50 List 2022 which brings together the 50 most inspiring individuals, initiatives, products and services which are driving forward decarbonisation.

Professor Short has been named within the Net Zero Hero category for his work with the University’s Centre for Sustainable Engineering which focuses on the design, development, and enhancement of engineering systems, processes, and products that are efficient and sustainable without compromising the natural environment.

He has been active in Net Zero research, innovation, and technology transfer since 2010.

Forging a smarter, greener industrial economy is a key pillar of Teesside University’s research strategy and Professor Short’s work plays a major part in this mission.

Work is progressing on the University’s £13.1 million Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre which is due to open next year and will be central to the Tees Valley Combined Authority's regional innovation strategy, positioning Teesside firmly at the heart of the UK's green industrial revolution.

Professor Short said: “I am surprised and, at the same time, also delighted to receive this accolade and would like to thank Digital Leaders for including me in this list.

It is a great honour to be considered as an inspiring individual in this way, and it is also testament to the great work around Net Zero we have been involved in at the University.

The Net Zero 50 List is organised by Digital Leaders, a cross-sector network of over 180,000 leaders which works to eliminate the issues holding back digital transformation in the UK, such as access to knowledge, networks, and skills.

The list was unveiled today (Tuesday) to coincide with the COP 27 United National Climate Change Conference which is taking place in Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt.

It aims to highlight the role which the UK is playing in global sustainability developments as well as advancing the conversation across sectors and forming a network around innovative solutions to reach Net Zero.
