Max O’Hara and Harvey Richards, second year students at Teesside University, were already regulars at Blackwell Meadows, the home of Darlington Football Club, through years of spectating.

But they are now more likely to be seen pitch side with a camera and microphone in hand rather than a programme and a cup of Bovril.

The two students were successful in applying for media assistant roles at the club, which collaborated with the University’s Sport Journalism course to provide the opportunity.

They receive support from both club and University while producing content for the Quakers’ publications, website and social media. Stuart Armstrong, of Darlington Football Club, said: 'We’re delighted to have them on board.

'They have been eager to contribute and have been creating written content that has been a big hit with our fan base.

'Max and Harvey are a credit to the University and its Sport Journalism course.' Teesside University is committed to developing job-ready graduates who can succeed and make a difference in the workplace.

Work experience, live projects and placements are key to this, ensuring that students develop the skills that employers need.

Jim Entwistle, Sport Journalism course leader at Teesside University, said: 'We’re always trying to find meaningful placements for our students to test their skills in the real world.

'The lads are excelling in their placement, and this is having a positive effect back in the classroom as they grow more confident and build their experience. We’re grateful to the club for making this possible.'

Max O’Hara, 20, of Darlington, but originally from Cork, Ireland, said: 'I’m really enjoying the experience. It’s a challenge, but that’s pushing me to do my best work.'

Harvey Richards, 19, also of Darlington, said: 'As a lifelong Darlington fan, being able to combine my studies and my passion is a dream come true.'
