After finishing my undergraduate degree in Brazil and working for a few years, I felt it would be of great importance for my career to develop my knowledge in my area. The UK was a good location for me at that time and Teesside University offered the type of independent learning I was looking for.

After working with fitness and physical training for years, I noticed that a great issue for many clients was maintaining the motivation to exercise. This was the subject I decided to explore, to help my clients and also other colleagues. I was also interested in improving my research skills. I really enjoyed the independent learning elements of the course, as they gave me the freedom to explore the subjects in which I was most interested. I felt motivated to work on the path of my choice, but always having orientation from a supervisor.

Through my final research project and other parts of my course, I built up my knowledge of exercise psychology, to support my career goals. At the same time, I created the basis of my own business, which was my ultimate aspiration. My course helped me to feel more confident in my skills and to make good contacts.

Today, one year after my graduation, I have a company based in Brazil called Physis4. My team works as a training provider. Our main service is a training course for fitness professionals and PE teachers. The content is focused on functional training and motivation for youth – “Physis4 Youth: Planning and implementing exercise programs for children and teenagers”. In the last year we worked on the online version and went through the legal process to be able to sell the course in the UK. We are endorsed by SkillsActive awarding body and this year we have started selling courses beyond the face-to-face programmes which we already offer in Brazil. We’ve also expanded into new courses such as Physis4 Seniors, which works with content focused on physical activity for the elderly. More about our work can be found at www.physis4.com

Apart from giving me opportunity to gain a deeper knowledge of sport and exercise psychology, my course at Teesside University also allowed me to improve my skills as a coach and fitness instructor, and helped me to grow my academic knowledge and experience for creating content to support other professionals too. The research skills I learned are something I intend to keep working on through my company. Part of my team is responsible for linking both theory and practice and we continue using research to help professionals who work directly with the public.
