Why did you choose to study at Teesside University? And why did you select your chosen subject?

I've always had an interest in creative writing. For many years I thought it could only ever be a hobby. When I heard about the creative writing courses at Teesside University I jumped at the chance. Teesside was recommended to me and it was close to where I lived and worked at the time.

What did you enjoy most about studying at Teesside University?

I enjoyed all aspects of studying at Teesside University. I grew up believing that I would never have the opportunity to study at university – I went to college before signing up for a modern apprenticeship instead, and I’ve worked ever since. Teesside University opened an entirely new doorway for me. I met new friends, learned a great deal about creative writing and was introduced to the spectacular world of performance poetry.

What are your career ambitions?

I’m establishing myself as a freelance creative practitioner and writer within the North East – and, in longer term, the rest of England and abroad. I am developing my business plan while writing pieces for competitions, journals and magazines. I am also working on my first collection of poems which will be published next year.

Would you recommend Teesside University?

I certainly recommend Teesside University and the MA Creative Writing – in fact I’ve recommended it on a number of occasions. It’s a fantastic course – and great for others to learn these skills.

For me the course was exceptional value for money. You can’t put a price on these experiences and opportunities. Teesside University and the MA Creative Writing have completely changed my life. I am now embarking on a new career – it’s actually a dream come true.
