World COPD day 2022

  • World COPD day 2022

  • 16 November 2022

  • 8.00AM - 5.00PM

  • Centuria South, Forum, On campus

We are celebrating World COPD Day 2022 by holding an all-day event within the SHLS and in collaboration the charity Breathe Easy, Darlington.

People with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) have overwhelming breathlessness, particularly during exertion, which results in an inability to complete normal daily activities such as climbing stairs or making the bed. It is often accompanied by secondary complications such as pain, fatigue, impaired balance, muscle weakness and anxiety and depression.

The event will showcase research being conducted within the school with people who have chronic breathlessness due to COPD or another lung condition. There will be:

• interactive displays, for example you can test your own lung function using a handheld spirometer.
• the opportunity to “meet the expert patient” as members of Breathe Easy, who all have chronic breathlessness, talk to students and staff to answer their questions (perhaps you have wondered about the best way to ask someone about their smoking history, or what advice has helped them most).
• a yoga session specifically tailored for people with COPD: At lunch time (12-12.45) we are joined by a master yoga trainer, Ben Harrison, who will lead this class. It will be largely chair-based and incorporate elements of mindful breathing. Breathe Easy members will be taking part and we welcome everyone to come and join in. For sport and health care students this is an opportunity to see how exercise can be adapted for people with varying degrees of ability.
• a static biking challenge: Throughout the day our coast-to-coast static bike challenge will be taking place. Two bikes will be in action to virtually cover Wainwrights famous 190 mile route (within the working day (9-5pm)) and a proportion of the distance will be covered by Breath Easy members who have a chronic lung condition themselves. If you would like to sign up to do a leg (10 minutes or 1 hour – it all helps) please contact Sophie Suri (s.suri@tees.ac.uk). Any funding raised during the static bike challenge will be donated to the charity Breathe Easy, Darlington to help them continue the work they do supporting people living with a lung disease and their families.
