Teesside University has an international reputation for its expertise in Building Information Modelling (BIM).

BIM is a process involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places. It is changing how buildings, infrastructure and utilities are planned, designed, built and managed.

BIM is changing the construction industry and is recognised by the UK Government as the most effective way to drive efficiency, delivery and use in building design.

Using BIM for a project has several benefits including: • better visualisation of designs at an early stage helping to get the design right first time and avoid expensive variations • greater certainty and predictability of time, cost and quality • lower design fees and construction costs as a result of better understanding and spatial coordination and better construction and project management • quicker, more consistent and easier coordination of design documentation.

Working with Teesside University has enabled us to expand our BIM capabilities and improved efficiencies in our workflows which in turn keeps us at the leading edge of our industry delivering BIM projects for masterplanning and landscape architecture.

Teesside University can work with companies to provide expert BIM consultancy to help them to be more effective and to better collaborate with clients and win more business.

The University recently completed a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Colour Urban Design Ltd, which looked at how the Newcastle and London-based urban designers, landscape architects and masterplanners could embed BIM in their work.

Stephen Blacklock, the technical director of Colour UDL, said: ‘Working with Teesside University has enabled us to expand our BIM capabilities and improved efficiencies in our workflows which in turn keeps us at the leading edge of our industry delivering BIM projects for masterplanning and landscape architecture.’
