Identity, Practice and Policy in Education

The Education Research Group facilitates research and discussion that builds on the expertise of the department in education provision across the life span, with a particular focus on early years, further and higher education, seeking to examine complex issues of educational practice and the changing role of pedagogues.

Current areas of research activity include the role of early years practitioners in working with children from disadvantaged backgrounds and approaches to literacy and the use of music to foster creativity in early years and primary educational environments. Much of this work is carried out in partnership with schools and early years settings in Teesside and the North East and with regional third sector organisations such as Children North East.

The department also has research interests in higher education practice and youth work, with other recent activity including research into the National Citizenship Service.
