The visit came as the course leader for the MSci (Hons) Chiropractic course received a prestigious national award for his efforts in driving forward teaching excellence in the subject.

Brian, who has played for clubs including Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Leicester City and West Ham United, visited Teesside University to deliver a guest lecture to first year MSci (Hons) Chiropractic students from the School of Health & Life Sciences.

He drew on his years of experience in the professional game as a player, manager and owner to offer insight into the important role of healthcare in sport.

Brian, who scored the first ever Premier League goal, discussed how medical teams impacted his own footballing career, from injury to patient care, and how the development of research and science over the years has led to advancements in the way healthcare teams operate in the industry.

He also went into detail about the responsibility of medical professionals to use their knowledge and expertise to treat patients correctly, after poor healthcare he received left him needing bilateral hip replacements.

Students benefited from the lecture, which demonstrated the real-world applications of classroom discussions around evidence-based medicine, patient-centred care, informed consent and the importance of regulated healthcare.

Daniel Moore, Course Leader for the MSci (Hons) Chiropractic course, said: ‘We aim to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed within industry to become effective healthcare professionals and we focus on the real-world contexts of what we discuss in the classroom to develop graduates who are ready to begin their careers.

Daniel recently received national recognition from the British Chiropractic Association with the prestigious Chiropractor of the Year Award.

The award highlights Daniel’s outstanding work in his field, driving forward education in the region to inspire the next generation of chiropractors.

Daniel added: ‘I am extremely proud to be named as Chiropractor of the Year; receiving such significant recognition in a profession you are truly passionate about is very rewarding.

‘I am so grateful to be in a position where I can further influence chiropractic in Teesside University’s School of Health & Life Sciences and I will continue to share my passion with others moving forward.’

The MSci (Hons) Chiropractic course at Teesside University looks at the musculoskeletal system and deals with diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders.

Students engage with theoretical and practical modules as well as clinical placements on their journeys to become highly skilled and knowledgeable chiropractors.
