Teesside welcomes magnificent seven for prestigious international scholarship
Seven high-flying overseas students have been welcomed to Teesside University to boost their careers and help reinforce their commitment to improving public health across the globe.
Teesside has been successful in securing seven students via the prestigious and world-renowned Commonwealth Scholarship programme.
The students, from Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana and Bangladesh, are all studying the Masters of Public Health (MPH) and will spend a year at Teesside before returning home to put what they have learnt into practice.
The Commonwealth Scholarships are open to students from the least developed and lower middle income Commonwealth countries and are aimed at high achievers who otherwise may not be able to afford to study in the UK. The Scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development with the aim of supporting sustainable development in Commonwealth countries.
David Aluga worked as a Pharmacist in Nigeria before applying for the Scholarship.
He said: 'I have a passion for public health and am interested in developing ideas to help meet the challenges facing my environment in Nigeria.
'To receive this Scholarship is one of the greatest things to happen to me. It is known all over the world as one of the most prestigious scholarships you can get and it will certainly give me an added advantage in my career.
'I am looking forward to studying at Teesside University, having a great experience and accomplishing my aim.'
Mabel Morrison worked as a Medical Officer in Ghana after studying medicine and surgery.
It has given me a platform to achieve my dreams.
She said: 'Ultimately I would like to do a PhD and one day get the opportunity to become a consultant in public health to help people in my home country and the world at large.
'The Scholarship is the best achievement of my career and I feel so privileged to be chosen from so many people all over the world. It has given me a platform to achieve my dreams.
'Everybody has been so welcoming in Teesside – I already feel at home here.'
Lawrence Nnyanzi, Senior Lecturer in Research Methods at Teesside University, leads on the Commonwealth Scholarships and was delighted to secure seven students.
'The Scholarships aim to support talented individuals from Commonwealth countries and help them obtain the skills, knowledge and experience to take home and make a significant contribution to lives and communities,' explained Lawrence.
Dr David Bell, Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) at Teesside University, said: 'We provide a wide range of opportunities for international students who come to study at Teesside from all over the world and we are delighted to be able to offer such a high number of Commonwealth Scholarships.
'This year’s recipients are extremely dedicated and knowledgeable and I am sure they will be hugely successful during their time at Teesside and beyond.'
