Undergraduate study

Course overview

Do you want to be the next Zoella, Jo Malone or James Dyson? If you have the energy, drive and commitment required to set-up and run your own business, our innovative and pioneering Team Entrepreneurship course can help you develop the knowledge and skills you need to achieve success, and maybe even change the world.

Accelerated degrees offer an alternative route to studying a full undergraduate degree. In addition to offering a saving on tuition fees, you also benefit from a year without paying any maintenance costs. The BA (Hons) Team Entrepreneurship is for budding entrepreneurs who are keen to develop and grow a business or multiple businesses. It allows you, as an enterprising student, to gain a full academic degree qualification whilst also developing key business skills over an intensive two-year study block.

This course is not your typical degree. Your learning is largely based on practice and you receive guidance and support from business coaches, instead of lecturers. You direct your own learning and participate in team sessions, rather than attend lectures. Instead of examining case studies, you run a business and trade from the first year. You learn by doing.

Inspired by the groundbreaking Finnish Team Academy approach and part of a growing international network, this programme is a new type of learning experience and one of only a handful of such courses to run in the UK. In the first few weeks you form a Team Company with other students, and work on real projects gaining invaluable experience.

You’re not given a prescribed reading list – you tailor your own from a large menu of material. Although you still have to write essays, assessments also take place in more imaginative and dynamic ways.

You learn how to find compromises in a team situation, take a leadership role at the appropriate time, communicate well with business leaders, peers and customers, understand the regional, national and international contexts for a business, and show initiative. Your learning is embedded through practice at every step.

Studying one of Teesside University Business School’s flagship programmes, you benefit from our close links with industry and the professional bodies who accredit a number of our programmes. We’ve invested £7.5m to provide modern, innovative teaching and learning spaces and the latest fully technologically-enabled facilities.

Professional accreditation

With dual accreditation at Teesside University, as well as the degree you will receive a Level 5 Certificate in Management and Leadership from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), which is the only chartered professional body for management and leadership. Dual accreditation means you will automatically receive a second professional qualification upon successful completion of your programme. By adding this CMI qualification to your University qualification, you’re really on the road to success.

• You instantly become more employable when you receive a CMI professional qualification that is industry-recognised
• You will gain access to exclusive CMI networking events
• You will have the opportunity to attend lecturers from top level CMI industry-expert members
• CMI’s qualifications sit on the RQF framework and are recognised by the European Credit Framework
• CMI qualifications fast-track students into the next stage of training to become Chartered Managers
• During your students you will become a CMI Affiliate member, giving you a host of additional benefits to support your development and employability.

Course details

Our Team Entrepreneurship programme is broken down into three main themes of activity:

  • personal excellence which includes team working skills, management and leadership
  • business management which includes all aspects of setting up and running a business
  • business in context which includes market research and strategy.

You study and practice the core business functions including human resource management, finance, business law, marketing, leadership and strategy. You also practice creative thinking techniques and link them with innovative business design, and you establish a business, planning and managing the ongoing trading of projects under the team business.

There is emphasis on team working and self-development. Much of your work involves working in teams – your success is measured by how you develop as part of that team and the development of your practical leadership skills.

How you learn

Because your learning is self-directed you don’t attend lectures. Coaches support your team in establishing and achieving its business and learning goals through twice-weekly sessions.

You are supported to identify gaps in your knowledge and skill-set and take action to address them. Personal reflection is a big part of your learning and this enables you to evaluate the effectiveness of any activity and improve the way you learn.

How you are assessed

Assessment and feedback includes:

  • critical resource reviews (books, articles, interviews, TED talks etc.)
  • reflective essays
  • activity logs
