Tourism is a word that affects many people globally. The travel and tourism industry is a vast, dynamic industry offering a wide range of career opportunities. By 2030, UNWTO forecasts international tourist arrivals to reach 1.8 billion (UNWTO Tourism Towards 2030) indicating unpresented growth within this dynamic sector.

Designed in partnership with employers, it gives you a solid theoretical and practical understanding of travel and tourism management, enabling you to progress to higher-level studies or directly into industry. You can apply what you learn to your own workplace experience. This course is an award of Teesside University delivered in partnership with Hartlepool College.

Year 1 core modules

Customer Service Management in Travel and Tourism


This module will focus on the design of customer service delivery systems and procedures in travel and tourism organisations and how customer service quality can be managed effectively. You will be provided with essential customer service management knowledge and skills such as customer service operations, resolution of customers’ complaints and queries and analysis of the effectiveness of customer service. The module will also deliver knowledge of customer satisfaction, customer service improvements and use of quality systems to create a customer-focused culture.

Financial Decision Making

You gain an overview of financial techniques so you can participate in the efficient management of the financial resources of the organisation. You cover the planning and budgeting process through to the evaluation of performance. This process includes decision making based on financial data; preparing budgets and analysing performance against budget; looking at ways to add value.

You explore financial data used in organisations. You examine issues relating to problem solving and the need for financial decision making. The module reflects current and on-going financial awareness needed in organisations. The content of the module is mapped against the key financial principles used in financial accounting.

Managing and Developing Talent in Practice

You gain an understanding of the main theories of human resource management (HRM) and how they are applied within the travel and tourism environment. You also gain the necessary theoretical and practical underpinning necessary to the comprehension and analysis of the nature of HRM as well as the importance of effective recruitment and selection, the management of staff and staff engagement.

Sales and Marketing in Travel and Tourism

Marketing plays a significant role in any industry and particularly in a service industry such as travel and tourism. Such organisations cannot operate without the use of promotion or market research for communicating with a range of customers. Most organisations have large marketing budgets within the sector, but during the last five years, we have seen significant change in the approach to sales and promotion in the sector. You examine factors that influence the marketing of products and services as well as analyse the effectiveness of promotional campaigns in order for organisations to achieve their marketing objectives. Your assessment allows you to analyse an organisation’s marketing strategy and explore the effective use of marketing theories and concepts.

The Work Environment and Self-analysis

The range of employment opportunities available in any industry are diverse, from specialist operatives through to strategic managers. Through the introduction of research methodology, the module will provide a framework around which you can explore and better understand the industry environment in which you are interested in working. To ensure you are in the best position to take advantage of the opportunities identified, you will also be supported to develop an understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses and formulate an action plan to bridge any identified gaps in knowledge, skills or understanding. The module will also provide a platform from which to pick up a more detailed analysis of a specific business organisation at level 5.

UK Tourism, Diversity and Importance

You analyse the importance and diversity of the UK tourism industry. You study visitor flows, origins and statistics as well as the different types of tourism products available within the UK. You also focus on the future of UK tourism as a catalyst for growth and employment.

 

Year 2 core modules

Current Issues in Travel and Tourism

You build on your knowledge of the areas studied on the course overall. You carry out a detailed research project and present the results in your summative assessment. You identify and justify the choice of your individual current issues project in which you carry out planned and detailed research over a set period of time. You access regular tutorial sessions throughout the year with a project supervisor and show progress through research findings and planned and actual results.

Events Tourism

You investigate the relationship between events and tourism and identify the different expectations and demands presented by this particular tourist group. This includes the influence of the size and location of an event on client expectations and the influence that this has on organisation of key aspects such as; accommodation, hospitality, travel infrastructure, security, staffing, physical resources and management. You also explore the positive and negative aspects of events led tourism on host towns, cities and regions, including the potential for regeneration and environmental impact.

Global Tourism Planning, Developing and Managing

You gain an understanding of the global tourism industry and the strategies that have been developed to create sustainable demand. You focus on the changing landscape of tourism globally as the industry responds to external drivers such as socio and cultural, economic and political factors. You also look at the impact of these factors on the planning and management of tourism and the need to align the current offer to emerging demand and opportunities, covering topics such as sustainability, cultural tourism, regeneration and emerging market opportunities.

Industry-related Project

You apply your wider learning from the programme in the context of a real work environment. Working with an organisation of your choice, you agree a project that assists them to improve or better understand an aspect of its operation. Your interaction with the organisation provides a solid platform to develop your report as well as offer a showcase for your skills, so enhancing your employability. You gain an understanding of the application of simple research methodologies and the analysis of results.

Tourism Technologies

You analyse the development and importance of e-business within the tourism industry. You focus on the trends and development of e-business through the advance of technology and its relevance for today’s tourism industry. You look at the benefits and limitations of technology for tourism organisations through the study of specific examples. The module culminates in the development of an e-business strategy for a tourism organisation.

You gain a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the travel and tourism industry as well as a range of practical, professional and key transferable skills required for graduate employability and lifelong learning.

How you are assessed

The knowledge and skills developed through the course are assessed in a variety of ways, using both in-course and end assessments. Methods include reports, essays, projects, case studies, exams, individual or group presentation, group activity and a personal development portfolio.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

A typical offer is 40-48 tariff points and GCSE grade C in Maths and English.

The entry criteria are based on your ability to succeed and can be demonstrated in a variety of ways including:

  • a range of Level 3 qualifications (NVQ 3, BTEC Award, A level)
  • appropriate training through work
  • maths and English at GCSE grade A-C (or equivalent).

The travel and tourism industry is a vast, dynamic industry offering a wide range of career opportunities. Typical areas of the industry which you could progress into include tour operations (UK and overseas), conference and events management, travel agency operations, aviation sector (airlines and airports), public sector tourism in the UK (tourist boards, regional development agencies and tourist information centres), attractions management (UK and overseas), transport provision, hospitality sector management and tourist guiding services.

You may also further your studies and progress to the BA (Hons) International Tourism Management (Top-up). Our graduates have gone on to have successful careers with Emirates, Swissport, Tui, Newcastle International Airport, British Airways, Kuoni, Thomas Cook, Expedia and Jet2.
