You gain the skills to take an innovative approach to computing in the digital age. Computing skills are central to all businesses who use networks, websites, programming languages and use database systems for integrated business systems.

You focus on a range of leading edge computing subjects that give you a competitive edge in your computing career.

Core modules

Client Computers and Server Administration

You are introduced to the key aspects of client PC maintenance and server management as applied to IT-based scenarios. You propose suitable hardware and software to a specification and budget, developing an understanding of why PC maintenance is important. You demonstrate that you understand why it is important to add security to devices and stop threats from occurring on systems.

Cybersecurity and Data Protection

You are introduced to the key aspects of cybersecurity and data protection issues that face an organisation in the current climate.

Database Development

You develop your ability to design and develop database applications to meet a business need. A case study is used to follow the system development lifecycle. You develop a server database application from inception to implementation for a real-world scenario.

Developing and Managing an IT Project

You develop an understanding of how projects are planned and designed. You work through a real-life project and provide a project plan which includes meeting the client requirements within deadline and budget. You demonstrate that you can conduct independent research, engage in decision making and problem solving to ensure that the project outcome is successful. The end product is a non-deliverable project.

Introduction in Networking Concepts

This module shows the importance of networking, communication between different devices, including the open systems interconnection layer, and best practices for using equipment.

Responsive Web Development

You develop responsive websites utilising an appropriate mark-up and style sheet language (HTML5 and CSS3). You are introduced to a web development lifecycle. You learn how web-based analysis and design techniques can be used early in the lifecycle and how project management and quality assurance/quality control techniques can be applied throughout the webcycle.

Working as an IT Professional

You develop an understanding of how to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders using a range of different tools. You engage in various tasks where you demonstrate practical, research and design skills before delivering a training event. You plan the activities to be undertaken during this module.

How you learn

The course is delivered using tutor-led classes, workshops, practical sessions, tutorials, and sessions on the virtual learning environment. There is also input from industry guest speakers. Where possible, field trips are incorporated into the programme.

How you are assessed

There are three types of assessments:

  • assignments
  • portfolios of evidence
  • practical activities.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

48 points or higher from one or more level 3 qualifications.

Mature students are welcome to apply and relevant work experience will be taken into account.

Maths and English at GCSE 4 or above, or an equivalent qualification.

Because this course is taught at Stockton Riverside College, we are not accepting applications from international students requiring a Student Visa.
