This is a Teesside University award delivered in partnership with Hartlepool College of Further Education. This award provides you with a programme of study over a range of disciplines to help you develop skills to progress your career through employment or further education at degree level.


Course overview

Fabrication and welding is one of the most important construction techniques used in engineering. You cover a range of processes from joining microfoil to the full thickness welding of plate in materials such as steel, cobalt, nickel-based alloys and non-ferrous metals. The course can be studied over three years or as a one-year top-up on completion of the HNC Fabrication and Welding.

Course structure

Level 5 core modules

Further Mathematics (HN)

You are introduced to the concepts necessary for the successful analysis of engineering problems and apply numerical methods relevant to solving advanced mathematical problems arising from engineering and technology

You learn how to use applications of number theory in practical engineering situations, solve systems of linear equations relevant to engineering applications using matrix methods, approximate solutions of contextualised examples with graphical and numerical methods, and review models of engineering systems using ordinary differential equations.

Professional Engineering Management (HN)

Whilst it is essential that a product or service designed by an engineer delivers the performance required in the specification, it is equally important that it contributes to the economic viability of the company and that all aspects of its life cycle are managed in a professional manner.

Research Project (HN)

You are introduced to the skills necessary to deliver a complex, independently-conducted research project within an engineering context. You are required to conduct research in order to produce a project that considers an original objective, explains the critical thinking skills employed in solving engineering problems and reflects upon multiple perspectives in order to reach a balanced and justifiable conclusion, all while employing methods of effective communication.

Advanced Welding Technology (HN)

You are introduced to current knowledge in advanced welding applications. It gives an understanding of recent developments in welding power sources and beam welding process and with the evaluation of welded joints. Theory of distortion versus residual stress in simple structures and weld test methods.  

Fusion Welding Metallurgy (HN)

You are introduced to the metallurgy of welding various common engineering alloys to include stainless steels, aluminium alloys and various other alloy steels and exotic materials. This includes the action of slags, fluxes and shielding gases and their effects on the weld-ability of metal alloys. The problem of corrosion and its effects on welded components will also be addressed.

Offshore Engineering (HN)

This module introduces the essential aspects of the offshore engineering industry, highlighting the types of installations, their design construction and installation. The processes involved within this industry, and their key parameters, are also examined with respect to oil and gas processing and transportation. Ancillary structures is discussed and utilisation within the working environment reviewed. In addition heavy lifting equipment, procedures and planning operations is reviewed, as is the roles and responsibilities of key personnel within the process. Corrosion and its inherent effects is detailed and preventative measures highlighted.

Quality Assurance and Management (HN)

This module investigates the principles of quality assurance and quality control and their function within a quality management system. In addition, you address the practical application of statistical quality control software.

Quality Assurance B (HN)

This module enables you to acquire an understanding of the organisation and functions of quality assurance and to apply procedures and techniques necessary for the control of quality standards in industry.

How you learn

You build on your knowledge and skills gained in your HNC by studying Level 5 modules that cover the needs of industry.

You learn though a range of teaching and learning methods including:
• lectures
• tutorials
• laboratory-based sessions
• computer laboratory-based sessions
• project.

You are required to complement your college-based learning with self-study.

Assessment is by a range of integrated assignments, case studies, projects and tests which are planned throughout the year.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

This HND course is a top-up to a HNC. You need a HNC in the same discipline.

We are not accepting applications from international students requiring a Student Visa for this course.

You can gain considerable knowledge from work, volunteering and life. Under recognition of prior learning (RPL) you may be awarded credit for this which can be credited towards the course you want to study.
