Television newsreader visiting Teesside to talk about her transition journey

Britain’s first openly transgender TV newsreader is visiting Teesside University to talk about her career and experiences.

India Willoughby, who currently works for ITV, is a newsreader, reporter and presenter who has appeared on numerous television and radio programmes including Lorraine, Loose Women, BBC’s Inside Out and BBC Five Live.

India will present her unique story of transition and working successfully in the media, both as a presenter and as the subject of news stories. She will share her experiences in a public lecture on Tuesday 14 March in The Curve, Room T1.10, from 5.30pm to 6.00pm.

There will also be an opportunity to ask questions following the talk. The lecture is open to students, staff and members of the public. Refreshments will be served from 5.00pm.

Teesside University has shown its commitment to embracing diversity and actively opposing prejudice through its All Different, All Equal pledge. The pledge is part of an ongoing initiative to ensure everyone across the University community feels respected and supported in an inclusive environment.

The University also features in lesbian, gay, bi and trans equality charity Stonewall’s annual list of top 100 UK employers. Stonewall’s top 100 places for LGBT employees to work across Britain is judged on the way each treats members of staff from the LGBT community.
