Your November student update

This month, we’ve got a vintage clothing sale, careers events, and plenty of writing and tech workshops to make your uni life that little bit easier. And, as the weather turns colder, we’ve also got some important advice on seasonal illnesses and keeping safe.

Have a great month!

Careers fortnight

7 - 17 November

Thinking ahead to life after uni? Careers fortnight can help you explore your next steps. The two-week event gives you the chance to meet with employers from a huge range of organisations and learn more about your options. Meet employers from the armed forces, creative arts, the engineering sector, law and policing and more. It’s all happening from 7 to 17 November in the Student Life Building.

Join a society for free

Our Students’ Union has an amazing range of societies – and this academic year, you can join them for free! It’s a great way to meet new people, develop new skills and have fun. From academic to cultural to hobbies and interests, there’s something for everyone. And if there isn’t a society for your particular interest, they’ll even help you set one up. Get in touch at activities@tees-su.org.uk.

Mental health support

Your uni experience should be exciting and enjoyable, but it’s not unusual to encounter difficulties with your mental health during your studies. If you need support, we can offer a confidential service to help you get the most out of your time here. We have a team of specialist advisers dedicated to supporting students with autism spectrum conditions and/or mental health conditions.

Seasonal illness

At this time of year, we see an increase in cold, flu and respiratory infections. And if you’ve been unlucky enough to be struck down with ‘Freshers Flu’, you’ll know it can be rough! So, maintain good hygiene practices to limit the spread of infection, especially as we spend more time indoors this autumn and winter. Sneeze and cough into tissues, limit close contact, wash your hands and sanitise regularly. If you’re unwell, stay at home. If you test positive for Covid-19, you’re still encouraged to report it.

Got a question about uni life?

We know how it is. The start of a new academic year can leave you with lots of questions – and you mightn’t be sure where to start. That’s where UNIverse comes in.

UNIverse is our self-service portal that puts everything in one place so you can search for help anytime, anywhere. Whether you have a question about library services, money matters, IT support or wellbeing, UNIverse can help.

Personal safety – tell us what you think

The University is working with our local Police and Crime Commissioner’s Safer Streets initiative to understand student perceptions of safety on our Middlesbrough campus. Our aim is to make sure you are aware of all of safety services available and whether you have any concerns we should know about. Take the two-minute survey to be in with the chance of winning an Amazon voucher.

Look after your TUSC

To help keep everyone on campus safe, please make sure you close doors and windows behind you. Remember, you need your TUSC to gain access to University buildings, and you should never let someone you don’t know into our buildings or car parks.

If you have lost your TUSC and need a new one, you can order one online. You’ll also need to cancel your old TUSC so no one else can use it.

Essay mills

We’re aware that some students are being emailed directly by essay writing services. Please remember there are rules in place to protect you. Plagiarising, having somebody else write your work or using so-called essay mills could result in Academic Misconduct. If you need help with your academic writing, speak to our team at the Learning Hub or sign up to their workshops.

No smoking campus

We have a no smoking policy that supports our aim of a smoke-free campus. Help us provide a healthy environment for everyone by not smoking anywhere on our campus.

Vaping is also prohibited in all University buildings and at the entrances, exits and ground floor windows of our buildings.
