What do you most enjoy about your role at Teesside University London?

The opportunity to inspire and guide the next generation of cyber security professionals. Being able to teach critical subjects, like data security, information governance and social engineering is incredibly fulfilling because I see firsthand how my students evolve their understanding and skills. I love creating a learning environment where complex cyber security concepts become accessible and engaging, helping students feel confident and prepared for the challenges of the digital world. The collaborative atmosphere at Teesside also allows me to constantly grow as a lecturer, exchange ideas with brilliant colleagues, and stay at the forefront of cyber security innovations. It's a rewarding experience to be part of a community so committed to shaping a safer digital future.

How does your role benefit and support students?

My primary focus is equipping students with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. I design and deliver modules that are aligned with real-world cyber security challenges, ensuring that students not only learn the fundamentals but also understand how to apply them in complex scenarios, from data security to ethical hacking.

Beyond the classroom, I support students by creating a collaborative and inclusive learning environment where they feel comfortable asking questions and exploring new ideas. I also guide them through research projects, helping them deepen their expertise and develop critical thinking skills. My goal is to build their confidence so they can approach cyber security issues with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.

Additionally, I mentor students on their career paths, offering advice and connections to industry opportunities. Ultimately, I aim to inspire my students to excel and make meaningful contributions to the cyber security field, preparing them to protect organisations and individuals from the growing threats in the digital age.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Supporting our first cohort of master's students, who recently graduated. Being part of their journey from their first class to the moment they walked across the graduation stage has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing them grow in their knowledge, confidence, and skills, and ultimately achieving their degrees, was a proud and fulfilling moment for me. It was a reminder of why I love what I do - empowering students to succeed in a rapidly evolving field.

Another memorable highlight was organising and contributing to a University cyber challenge in collaboration with Waterstons. It was amazing to see students from different disciplines work together to tackle real-world cyber security problems using tools like GoWitness, Nmap and Nessus vulnerability scanner. Their innovative approaches and teamwork were truly inspiring, and it reinforced my belief in the importance of hands-on, interdisciplinary learning experiences.

Finally, having the opportunity to speak at key industry events like BSides Bristol, BSides Newcastle, the upcoming Kubernetes United Kingdom meetup and London Tech Summit has been an honour. I am also part of the steering committee for the upcoming UKSec Cyber Summit in London. Sharing my insights and contributing to discussions on emerging cyber security challenges is something I am genuinely passionate about.

What is the best piece of advice you have for your students?

Stay curious and never stop learning. The field of cyber security, like many others, is constantly evolving, and the ability to adapt and grow with these changes is one of the most valuable skills you can develop. Do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, whether that means tackling a challenging project, participating in competitions, or attending industry events. Each new experience will add to your skill set and help you build resilience and confidence.

Also, remember that success in this field is not just about technical skills; it is also about collaboration, communication, and empathy. Invest in building your soft skills, as they will help you work effectively in teams and understand the broader impact of technology on society.

Above all, be kind to yourself throughout your journey. Everyone learns at their own pace, and setbacks are part of the process. Stay determined, ask questions, and take every opportunity to learn from those around you. The more you stay engaged, the more rewarding your journey will be.
