Why university and why Teesside?

Going to university was always the only option for me. I wanted the amazing experience that comes with it, but also to specialise in something that I was passionate about.

I attended an open day at Teesside and immediately felt it was right for me. The compact campus and small student cohort made it feel more personal and tailored to my needs. It was also far enough from home that I was able to have the independence I craved, but easy to travel home. The student support and well-being also appealed to me.

Why did you choose chemistry?

Chemistry has always been my favourite science, but I didn’t think I would be able to pursue it at degree level. I was elated to find that I had been offered interviews for several different courses, including chemistry. I feel like it's the best choice I ever made and believe that everything happens for a reason, and I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to excel in a subject I love so much.

What do you like most about your course?

The staff support on the course is amazing. It’s very personal during lectures and seminars, and staff are always willing to have discussions and give that extra help when needed. The course challenges your scientific thinking to its maximum capacity, as well the chance to make mistakes, consolidate and improve, especially in laboratory work. I especially enjoyed inorganic chemistry. After the first two years of university, everything finally clicked together and I enjoyed all my final year modules, it was a rewarding feeling.

What do you think about the campus and the services offered?

The services and facilities at the Students’ Union are brilliant. The different events are fantastic, as well as the student support officers who are there to help with any queries, such as housing, money worries or personal issues.

The library is amazing, I have spent late nights writing lab reports there. Having that facility on your doorstep, is extremely helpful, especially being able to work in a productive environment with the resources you need.

What do you think about Middlesbrough and the surrounding area?

I have lived in Middlesbrough for four years and have decided to stay here to complete my next steps after university. As much as I miss home, after being here for so long this feels like home now. It’s nice to go out and explore the surrounding areas, especially Saltburn and Whitby on the train.

What skills have you gained at Teesside that you feel will help you in your chosen career?

The greatest skill I’ve gained is confidence when presenting ideas, especially in the three group project modules. Being able to show leadership in a group as well as working collaboratively is extremely important for my future.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I am now working as an encapsulation technologist for a company called Micropore Technologies Ltd based at the Wilton Centre, in Redcar. I absolutely love my new role and feel incredibly lucky that I have a job that I am passionate about.

Would you recommend Teesside University?

I would 100% recommend Teesside University and my course to anyone applying. Chemistry offers so many different career possibilities and the academic staff are there to support you through the entire process.

To new students, I would say attend all the freshers’ events and enjoy every minute of your time at Teesside.
