Studying international tourism management with us, Lucy is turning her lifelong curiosity about global cultures and tourism into a rewarding academic and professional journey.
I believe tourism has the power to foster cultural understanding, support local economies and protect the environment when approached responsibly.
I chose Teesside because of the consistent positivity I had heard about it from others. I know people who have studied and graduated here, and it always came highly recommended for its quality education and supportive environment. The University’s wide range of student support services stood out to me, as they align with my needs and values. I wanted not only to gain a degree, but also broaden my knowledge of tourism and develop important life skills. I was also drawn to the opportunity to meet new people, try new things, and grow both personally and professionally.
I’ve had a lifelong passion for travel and tourism. From a young age, I have been fascinated by the diversity of cultures, traditions and ways of life around the world, which has inspired my curiosity about the global tourism industry. I am particularly drawn to the dynamic nature of tourism, the opportunity to connect with people from different backgrounds, and the ability to contribute to meaningful travel experiences.
I am also passionate about making a positive impact internationally by promoting sustainable tourism practices and helping communities in need. I believe tourism has a power to foster cultural understanding, support local economies and protect the environment when approached responsibly. I want to develop the skills and knowledge to advocate for sustainable solutions, create opportunities for underserved communities, and contribute to a tourism industry that benefits both people and the planet.
I am currently studying two modules: Understanding Tourism and Marketing Insights, both of which I have found fascinating. My lecturers are highly engaging and make the learning experience enjoyable. I am particularly enjoying Understanding Tourism, as it has given me the opportunity to visit nearby tourist destinations such as Redcar, and thoroughly opened my eyes to why the North East is just as appealing as other parts of England.
Additionally, I’ve had the incredible experience to go to London alongside students from other courses, where we visited exciting places like British Airways’ Headquarters for a behind-the-scenes tour, explored museums, and attended the prestigious World Travel Market. These experiences, as well as making great friends who share my passion for tourism, have enriched my University journey.
My favourite place on campus is the Library. It is always warm and relaxing making it a great space to focus on my work. The café in there offers lovely food and staff are friendly, making it a perfect place to recharge.
As someone who has grown up in the Teesside area, I find Middlesbrough to be a diverse and vibrant place, home to people from a variety of cultures who are welcoming and friendly. There are a range of shops and amenities in the town with more opening, making it a great place to live and study. Teesside University further enhances the area, bringing a positive energy and contributing to the community’s development and appeal.
I am a course rep, giving me the opportunity to voice the opinions and concerns of myself and my classmates. I represent our collective views and contribute to positive changes within the course and University. I am also looking into becoming a student ambassador, to further engage with the University community.
Studying at Teesside has helped me develop valuable skills, such as public speaking, which has made me more confident and self-assured. Experiences like delivering presentations have pushed me out of my comfort zone and improved my ability to communicate effectively. These skills are essential for my future career path, as being able to speak openly and confidently is a key requirement in many professional roles, especially within the tourism industry.
I aspire to travel as much as possible and explore different career paths, such as working for renowned airlines like Emirates, contributing to travel agencies, or immersing myself in new cultures and languages. I am also passionate about giving back through voluntary work and dream of managing or even opening my own hotel internationally one day.
