Why Teesside?

I studied BA (Hons) History at Teesside University and the course was exceptional. I was awarded a postgraduate scholarship from my tutors, so progressing to the postgraduate course was a no-brainer for me. It demonstrates that hard work and commitment can lead to rewards.

Best thing about your course?

Being encouraged to think and process history beyond the confines of a series of chronological events. To consider philosophical, economic, social, and cultural aspects of society; using primary source evidence to make observations.

What did you think about the campus and services?

The history staff are superb - extremely helpful and passionate. The campus has everything you need. The facilities are excellent, especially the Library, which is modern and accessible, and the staff are helpful with any queries.

Any extracurricular activities?

I volunteered at Kirkleatham Museum through the University’s volunteering scheme, Volun-tees and I was a awarded a certificate for my work there. I also worked at the museum through the University's paid internship scheme.

Did you receive any financial support from Teesside University?

I received a paid scholarship which helped me buy books, access learning materials, and generally get by while I developed academically. I will forever be grateful for that.

What are you doing now?

After graduating I worked as a heritage project officer for Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council –my studies certainly helped get me the job. After working on exhibitions and heritage projects, I progressed to my current role as community development officer where I liaise with local organisations, community groups and elected members to identify any issues and provide solutions. I’m also part of initiatives to engage the local population in events and campaigns. In my current role, communication skills and presenting facts and evidence clearly is important, as well as analysing data and producing reports.

Did your time here help you to achieve or get closer to your goals?

Definitely. I left secondary school with a history GCSE and thought I wouldn’t achieve anything academic. But by the time I reached my mid-twenties, I felt an affinity for research and writing, and wanted to develop my passion for history. Teesside gave me the opportunity to flourish in an environment that fosters critical and creative thinking and gain transferable employment skills.

As a result of Teesside University's investment in me, I have held several senior roles in heritage, strong ambitions to pursue a PhD, and am currently employed in a hugely satisfying role helping my local community. These are goals I could never have dreamed of before coming to Teesside.

Would you recommend Teesside?

Yes, the tutors are hugely knowledgeable, helpful and passionate. If you're willing to put the work in, they're willing to support you. As well as the achievement of graduating, I also feel I have become a better person.
