BA (Hons) International Business with Marketing (Top-up)

Sophia's time at Teesside has led to her gaining transferable skills that she can apply to any profession in her future career.

My favourite module was Marketing Planning, where we worked on a live campaign for Greggs. It was a great opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills developed throughout the course to a real-world business challenge.

Why Teesside?

I decided to go to university to improve my career opportunities. After researching roles I want to work in, I found that having a degree would be beneficial and help me stand out from other candidates in a competitive job market. Teesside University was always one of my first options as it’s in my local area, and after doing my research I was also impressed by the Business School’s reputation.

Why international business with marketing?

It is an area that has always interested me, and with the degree I chose, I knew I would not be limited with career avenues once I graduated. After previously working in education, I felt ready for a career change and wanted to pursue a field that better aligned with my interests and long-term career goals.

Best part about the course?

I had the opportunity to access a wide range of resources and student workshops; from Adobe and AI sessions to skill-building opportunities with real companies.

My favourite module was Marketing Planning, where we worked on a live campaign for Greggs. It was a great opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills developed throughout the course to a real-world business challenge.

Tell us about the campus and services offered

Especially for new students who may not know anyone, there is a lot on offer to help you meet new people. From themed events and clubs to different activities at the Students’ Union, there are so many opportunities to get involved and make friends.

The facilities are amazing – there’s a Starbucks on campus, homemade pizza ovens if you want pizza for lunch, pods located all around the university if you want to work in a high-tech suite, and many others. The Library is open 24 hours a day, which hugely benefited me as I could study around my work and life commitments.

After completing my course, the careers team have been amazing. From keeping me informed about new job opportunities to providing help and support with interviews and CV building, they ensured I was fully supported and prepared for my next steps.

Tell us about Middlesbrough and the surrounding area

I may be biased being from Middlesbrough myself, but I think there’s a lot on offer – especially in close proximity to the University. From restaurants, bars and cinemas, you have everything you need.

Tell us about any extra-curricular activities you’ve been involved in

I worked with the Launchpad team, who provide support on new business start-ups. I started my own photobooth business alongside my current job and rented an office from the University during my studies.

What skills have you gained to help you with your career?

Time management, the ability to prioritise tasks and resilience. These transferable skills are important in any profession and have helped me become more organised, adaptable and effective in the workplace.

I have now started an internship with the marketing team at Teesside University and feel fully equipped. As part of this, I want to explore different areas of marketing to identify what interests me most, and best suit my skills and career goals. From working on campaigns to being involved in social media strategies, it’s the perfect way to begin my career.

Ambitions for the future?

I’m hoping to move to a city (probably Manchester) and work in a creative role in marketing or PR.

Any advice for future students?

I would say the most important part is being proactive. There is so much support after finishing your course. You'll never feel alone if you're willing to reach out, stay engaged and use the resources available.
