What do you most enjoy about teaching at Teesside?

Our students! Meeting students from so many different backgrounds means that teaching at Teesside is never dull. Sharing my passion for the law with them is a privilege.

How do your students benefit from your experience?

My career at Teesside spans three decades. During this time, I've watched areas of law develop, and seen landmark judgments made and overruled. I've watched our graduates succeed both within and outside of the legal profession. I hope that my experience of accompanying so many students on this journey inspires our current students to do the same.

How has your research enhanced your teaching?

My research into vulnerable defendants and the criminal law means I've been lucky enough to meet some key experts in my field. As well as passing on my knowledge through my teaching, I enjoy sharing anecdotes with students about being star-struck whenever I meet a legal expert! I think talking to students about my research helps to bring law as an academic subject to life.

What has been the highlight of your career?

Joining a Law Commission Working Party at the Ministry of Justice, to advise on reforming the law on unfitness to plead was a huge highlight.

What is the best piece of advice you have for your students?

You'll get out of your time at university as much as you put in. Take advantage of everything the University has to offer - join the clubs, attend the lectures, do the reading, make plenty of friends and make your university experience unforgettable.
