Athena Swan

Applying for an award

Teesside University is a bronze award member of the Athena Swan Charter, and we have a detailed action plan which addresses some of the challenges identified in our submission.

Students on campus

Athena Swan was established by Advance HE in 2005, to recognise progress in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) subjects, and it was expanded in 2015 to recognise arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL).

The charter covers women (and men where appropriate) in academic roles, professional and support staff and trans staff and students in relation to:

  • representation
  • progression of students into academia
  • journey through career milestones; and
  • the working environment for all staff.

It is based on 10 key principles which institutions and departments must commit to.

Levels of Award

Bronze

Recognises that the University, school or department has a solid foundation for eliminating gender bias and developing an inclusive culture that values all staff.

Silver

Recognises a significant record of activity and achievement in promoting gender equality, and in addressing challenges across different disciplines.

Gold

Recognises a significant and sustained record of activity and achievement in addressing challenges and promoting gender equality within and beyond the University.

Application process

Athena Swan award applications are accepted twice a year, in April and November, and applicants must inform Advance HE of their planned submissions two months prior to the deadline.

Universities, schools and departments must specify the level of award they wish to apply for, and complete the application form.

More information on the application process can be found on Advance HE's Athena Swan website.

Writing a submission

Before embarking on an Athena Swan submission applicants need to establish a self-assessment team to develop award submissions and subsequently monitor action plans. It is also important to engage with your community to raise awareness of Athena Swan and drive the cultural piece prior to writing the submission.

All submissions are founded on an assessment of gender equality in the institution/ department (based on quantitative and qualitative evidence) and a four year action plan that builds on this assessment, to inform activity that addresses key challenges. Advance HE has produced detailed guidance for applicants. It is also useful to explore examples of good practice from across your institution and the wider sector when developing a submission.

Data requirements

All applications are based on a thorough assessment of gender equality in the institution or department, identifying both challenges and opportunities. This assessment should be based on staff and student data, as well as other qualitative evidence such as policies, practices, systems and arrangements) evidence.

We have established an Athena Swan data group to support these data requirements. Data to support your submission can be found by contacting the Athena Swan data team.

Guidance and Good practice

There are a number of champions across the university who may be able to share their experiences of Athena Swan with you. For more detailed support about writing a submission you should contact our Athena Swan coordinator in the first instance.

Advance HE also has a wide range of advice and guidance on their Athena Swan website.
