Building on the success of the last two years, Teesside University is excited to once again host the North East edition of FameLab, the international competition coordinated by Cheltenham Festivals.
FameLab challenges scientists to captivate the public by presenting their research in a clear, engaging, and charismatic way - all within just three minutes! Participants are evaluated on three key criteria: Content, Clarity, and Charisma.
We invite PhD students, early career researchers, lecturers, and scientists from across the North East to showcase their skills and take part in this exciting opportunity.
Expressions of interest close on Friday 16 January 2026 - don't miss out!
Once you register, you'll receive expert-led training in science communication. After completing the training, you'll be invited to submit a 3-minute personal video presenting your research. If selected, you'll advance to the Regional Final on 28 March at Teesside University, where you'll present live in front of an audience.
The winner of the Regional Final will then have the exciting opportunity to compete in the FameLab UK National Final, hosted by Cheltenham Festivals on 5 June, with all expenses covered!
Please note that video submissions should not include special editing or effects, and only props that can be easily carried on stage are allowed. Your presentation will be judged on three key criteria: Content, Clarity, and Charisma.
We'll support you every step of the way, providing guidance throughout the registration process.
Applicants must be aged 21 or older. Full-time science communicators/media/PR professionals are not eligible.
If you have any questions regarding eligibility or the application process, please contact Elena Calin, Public Engagement Officer e.calin@tees.ac.uk
If you're thinking about taking part in FameLab, do it! I absolutely loved the experience from beginning to end. As someone terrified by public speaking, it was a perfect opportunity to embrace the fear and challenge myself.
