How long have you been a student ambassador?

Three years.

Where are you from?

Stockton on Tees.

Why did you want to become a student ambassador?

To meet new people and develop my confidence and communication skills. I also wanted to learn more about the University whilst helping new and prospective students. The job is flexible and it works so well around my studies.

What sort of work have you been involved with?

A great variety. I help with Year 5 reading in local primary schools as part of a literacy programme, as well as working at open days and the annual Year 12 residential summer school.

The Year 5 literacy programme is set across eight weeks and is especially rewarding as I’ve been able to see a significant confidence increase in the readers I have worked with throughout this time.

My favourite job so far has been the residential summer school. Year 12 students from across the UK stay at Teesside University for four days and live the life of an undergraduate student, attending academic sessions and team building activities (including water sports and an air trail course at Tees Barrage). As an ambassador I helped out with all of this, supporting the students, getting to know them and telling them about my student experiences.

What’s the best part of your role as an ambassador?

The team of people you get to work with. One day you may be working with someone your own age, and the next you may be working with someone much younger or much older – the job gives you such a good opportunity to connect with so many people. I’ve built so many friendships through my role as an ambassador.

What would you say to anyone thinking about applying to the ambassador programme?

Go for it. With the amazing team, staff members and opportunities there’s nothing to lose. I’m so thankful I applied in my first year otherwise I would’ve regretted not applying sooner!
