Course overview
You learn ways to minimise mistakes and you become familiar with referencing and constructing a bibliography. You also explore syntax and punctuation through exercises and discussion.
You learn through a combination of live elements and pre-recorded material. Tutor support is available throughout the specified weekly times and collaborative learning is available through our online learning platform.
Summer university

You can study up to 30 credits at Summer University and you can select up to three modules on the same application form. If you would like to add a module later, or change one of your choices, then please email summer.university@tees.ac.uk.
Age restriction
Due to the content and delivery of our Summer University courses, it is advised that applicants are aged 16+ at the time of enrolment. All applicants under the age of 18 at the time of enrolment must provide a completed parental consent form and those under 16 years of age are required to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. You can download the

Course details
What you study
- syntax, grammar, spelling, punctuation
- style, academic form, types of essay, appropriate tone
- essay process, note-taking, essay planning (structuring, sign-posting)
- essay presentation, plagiarism, paragraphing, editing
- referencing and creating bibliographies.
How you are assessed
Assessment is through a series of exercises and short pieces of writing. In addition, students will submit an essay plan and write an essay (c.1000 words) on a topic negotiated with the tutor.
