Courtroom Skills: Digital Forensics

Teesside University’s experienced digital forensic, law and policing academics have been working with industry partners to develop a course that gives you the skills you need to give evidence in court.

 

1 day (8.30am – 5pm)

 

Course overview

Delivered in our mock courtroom with a trained magistrate, this one-day course is designed to equip digital forensic professionals with the skills and knowledge to prepare for court, support legal proceedings and effectively provide evidence as either a professional or expert witness.

This course is for you if you are:
• currently working as a digital forensic professional within an enforcement agency or in the private sector
• looking to gain skills to work in the digital forensic arena
• currently studying for a digital forensic (or related) qualification
• an employer with staff who attend court and give evidence on digital data and devices.

This course runs on 9 April 2024, 8.30am - 5pm.

Course details

What you study

You explore the following topics:
• structure and function of the criminal justice and legal systems
• statement and report writing, Streamlined Forensic Reporting (SFR), and Quality Standards
• the role of the professional or expert witness factual versus evaluative and interpretive evidence
• how to present evidence and stay professional under fire
• attending court: what to expect, going equipped and supporting proceedings behind the scenes
• courtroom exercises: an opportunity to practice giving evidence in a mock courtroom setting.

How you learn

Our experienced staff use real-world experience and case examples to give you skills that can be applied in context. Learn in our on-campus mock courtroom, where you have an immersive and realistic experience of what it is like to attend court.

This course is non-accredited.

Entry requirements

The course is suitable for anyone working in the digital forensic profession, as well as those who have (or are working towards) a relevant qualification and want to enter the profession.
