CNO002 Discovering a Nursing Career in General Practice

This is a pre-employment module for registered and student nurses, trainee nursing associates and registered nursing associates who wish to explore a career in general practice. Choose from a level 6, level 7 or a non-accredited route.

 

12 weeks (or up to 16 weeks for submission of assessments if undertaking level 6 or level 7)

 

Course overview

Gain a better understanding of primary care and general practice, developing the knowledge and skills to support a career move into the sector. This module is fully funded by Health Education England/NHS England for registered and student nurses, trainee nursing associates and registered nursing associates residing in England.

  • For the level 6 (UCPD) and level 7 (UCPPD) accredited routes, you are awarded with 20 credits.

  • For the non-accredited route, you are awarded with a certificate of completion.

What you study

The module content includes:
• introduction to primary care/general practice, the environment and how it fits into wider system working
• communication skills required in primary care/general practice
• career development in primary care/general practice
• overview of immunisations used in primary care
• overview of long-term conditions
• overview/introduction to learning disability health checks
• overview/introduction to sexual health/contraception
• introduction to clinical skills used in primary care/general practice.

How you learn

This module is delivered over 12 weeks and consists of both live and recorded online delivery. This blended approach utilises self-directed study, interactive lectures and group activities, case studies and simulated scenarios.

How you are assessed

Non-accredited module requires no formal assessment.

Level 6 (UCPD)
If you are studying at level 6, you must write a 2,500-word assignment on the role of the nurse in general practice.

Level 7 (UCPPD)
If you are studying at level 7, assessment includes a short online OSCE using basic consultation skills within the general practice setting, and a 2,500 word assignment on the role of the nurse in general practice.

Entry requirements

This course increases your employability within primary care. It is available to nurses and nursing associates, including pre-registration through to registered nurses working in different healthcare settings who want to start a career in general practice. This includes those working in adult, mental health, learning disability and children’s nursing.

• Pre-registration nurses (all fields) and trainee nursing associates can access the non-accredited version.
• Newly qualified nursing associates and nursing associates from other settings can access the non-accredited and level 6 (20 credits) versions.
• Newly registered nurses (within 12 months of registration) and registered nurses from other settings can access all versions, including level 7 (20 credits).

Career opportunities

This module provides you with an introduction to the knowledge and skills required within general practice nursing.

On completion, you are encouraged to make links with your local primary care network and discuss possible and upcoming vacancies. You are supported through the application process into primary care or general practice, including career development, support on CV writing and job interviews.
