Course overview
You are facilitated by a practice mentor based in your work environment. You also use a workbook with learning resources, completing each section for evidence. You have the opportunity to reason and reflect throughout the workbook with the support of your mentor - this gives you the confidence to support the patient or client in a way that is relevant to your role, enhancing your interaction with patients, clients and their relatives.
You attend an initial half-day induction followed by distance learning. This method of open learning facilitates work-based learning in a non-threatening environment - this encourages and rewards effort and addresses a growing need for accredited education in The Northern Cancer Alliance (Northern England Clinical Network).
Course details
How you learn
Through the support of a practice mentor, you identify your learning needs depending on your experience and the area in which you work. You liaise with your manager to choose a work-based mentor to give you support and facilitation, whilst completing the workbook.
Each section of the workbook has three stages of learning:
1. current knowledge and understanding
2. study learning resources and applying to practice
3. reflecting on your learning.
After reading or viewing evidence in the Study and Apply section, you have questions to complete as part of this workbook assessment to share with your mentor. This enables your practice mentor to help you apply your understanding to your particular role with clients or patients in your work environment. You and your practice mentor complete the reflection as evidence of learning outcomes.
The workbook is interactive, in that it contains many links to reliable and up-to-date resources. This strategy empowers you to develop confidence in finding evidence and engage with future independent learning. There are several links to evidence involve users, enabling you to engage with authentic learning and facilitate you to reflect on practice. To help this process, the workbook is available through the virtual learning environment e-learning site: eat.tees.ac.uk site so you have convenient access to the interactive resource links.
The module leader is available to support both you and your mentor, offering tutorial support where appropriate. You are guided in the workbook with academic writing, referencing, confidentiality and consent.
How you are assessed
You are assessed through the workbook – this includes a 1,000-word reflection on your learning to be submitted in week 15 of the module.

Applicants should be working in a supportive role with patients who have cancer and other long-term conditions
Applicants also need to identify a practice mentor who agrees to support them through the module.
