What you study
We introduce you to the principles and practices of effective research project management.
Research projects typically have three stages: the planning stage (where the methodological approach to be used is refined); the execution (or implementation) stage; and the dissemination stage. This award focuses primarily on the second and third stages in the life-cycle of the research project (the execution and dissemination stages).
Topics covered include the basics of costing research projects (and the importance of staying within budget), how to engage in good ethical practice, some of the issues involved in the effective management of RCTs (including those relating to safety reporting) and the good management of sensitive data. Other areas covered include participant recruitment strategies, compliance with data protection law, the different elements and activities associated with dissemination of research findings and working with others.
How you learn
If you choose to attend lectures and seminars in person, a range of student-centred learning and teaching strategies are used to engage you and enable you to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to effectively manage a health-related research project. These strategies include small group work with fellow students.
Distance-based students follow the same course of work as the attendance students, but the lecture and seminar content are available online through e-learning@ tees. You also participate in blog and wiki-based activities.
Tutorial support is provided in face-to-face interaction, through use of email and other communication tools.
How you are assessed
You write an individual 4,000 word research report describing a research project action plan. You are presented with a choice of which type of research project you manage, but all students are given the task of managing a project that includes a number of stock elements.

Applicants should generally have at least 2:2 degree qualification in a relevant subject area or evidence of previous study at level 6 in a related subject area is needed. Level 7 IELTS or above for applicants who do not have English as a first language is needed.

This award is aimed at those who have already been involved in the management of health-related research projects as well as those completely new to it. For either group, the award represents an opportunity to build on and strengthen existing skills or acquire new ones. Good project management skills and knowledge are necessary for the effective execution of research projects and are a key component of a successful research career.
