Course overview
The course is relevant for all fields of nursing who are lapsed NMC registrants. It helps you apply theoretical knowledge and concepts underpinning multi-disciplinary working to your practice area.
An initial five days of study addresses developments in nursing and mandatory training in areas such as manual handling, infection control and basic life support. After this you meet on Tuesday evenings to experience shared learning with nurses from other fields.
Interviews will be held in July with regard to personal values and behaviours outlined in the NHS Constitution for England (2012).
If you live in England and meet the eligibility criteria, the course is funded by HEE so there are no fees to pay. This also includes eligibility for a non means-tested bursary. How you learn
Tutor-led seminars offer you general knowledge and principles of relevant issues, followed by seminar work and group discussions which allow for greater debate of issues as applied to practice.
In practice, you will work alongside practice supervisors and be assessed by your practice assessor and academic assessor.
Your practice assessment is based on a practice assessment that demonstrates your progress in developing knowledge, skills, attitude and understanding of current practice using the NMC award outcomes as a framework.
Assessment is two parts:
You must prove to your practice assessor that you can practice safely and effectively and achieve practice competence.
You complete an academic piece of work, negotiated with the course leader. We fully appreciate that this may be the first piece of writing at this level that you have completed for a long time. Please do not allow this to deter you as advice can be offered in advance of the programme, and support will be given during your time at Teesside University.

- have a recordable professional qualification - lapsed (verified by the NMC)
- an enhanced DBS check and workplace risk assessment
- successful interview
You must also let us know if you have previously undertaken a Return to Practice course.
