Introduction to Policing and Investigation

You explore the development of policing, crime and investigation. The rise in popularity of crime fiction and TV dramas and fly-on-the-wall documentaries demonstrates an ever-growing interest in policing, crime and investigation.

Course overview

You look at the development of the modern police service, and the growth of investigative roles, both policing-related and private, to assist in the appreciation of the realities of policing and investigation. You explore the use of a range of both historical and more recent cases to explain the impact of lessons learned upon today’s policing and investigation methods.

You also explore the significance of the casual witness and their observational skills.

What you study

- the development of the modern police service
- the development of investigative roles (both policing and private)
- observational skills and the role of the witness
- introduction to the PEQF entry routes and relevant professional qualifications
- The Police Code of Ethics and academic misconduct
- how behaviour impacts on outcomes of cases
- valuing difference
- exploring lessons learned from previous cases.

How you are assessed

You are assessed by a short written 500 word exercise (50%), and a 20 question mid-course questionnaire, based on course content (50%).

International applicants must have an IELTS overall score of 5.5 or higher.
