Department of Anaesthesia launched at University

18 February 2002

The University of Teesside’s School of Health & Social Care is joining forces with consultant anaesthetists at South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust to launch a Department of Anaesthesia at the Middlesbrough-based university.

Professor Derek Fraser, the University’s Vice-Chancellor, will officially launch the new Department at 1pm on Wednesday 20 February 2002 in the Centuria Building, Victoria Road, Middlesbrough (programme attached). The new Department will be based within the Postgraduate Institute of the School of Health & Social Care and will be led by Professor Chris Dodds, Consultant Anaesthetist at the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough and Visiting Professor at the University, who has taken up the new Chair of Anaesthesia at the University.

Professor Dodds played a key role in establishing the MSc Evidence Based Practice Anaesthesia programme at the University. He says: “The new Department will raise the research profile of academic anaesthesia in the region. We have created a Research Consortium and are actively investigating the effects of anaesthesia and analgesia (pain killers) on the response to injury and advancing age.”

Mr Paul Keane, Director of the School of Health & Social, said: “The new Department of Anaesthesia is the result of successful collaboration between medical and academic colleagues in the region. We felt that such a Department was required in this area to give medical staff more immediate access to postgraduate education and research and development opportunities; and we are delighted by this new development which will complement the health and social care profile of the University.”

At the launch, Professor Leo Strunin, President of the Association of Anaesthetists and immediate Past-President of the Royal College of Anaesthesists, will speak about the place of academic anaesthesia in the future. Professor Dodds will speak on why the new Department has been formed and its key priorities.
