From Teesside graduate to Civic Mayor

Alumnus Manzoor Hussain returned to campus to share his inspiring journey from biotechnology student to Mayor of Barking and Dagenham

More than 30 years after graduating from Teesside University, alumnus Manzoor Hussain returned to campus to reconnect with staff and see how the University has evolved since his student days. Manzoor, who graduated with a BSc in Process Biotechnology in 1993, is now serving as Civic Mayor of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham for 2026-27.

During his visit, Mayor Hussain met with academic colleagues, toured the campus, and reflected on the role his education played in shaping his career. Since graduating, he has built a successful career in education as a secondary school teacher and, although recently retired, continues his commitment to public service.

Speaking about his return, Mayor Hussain described the visit as a proud and memorable moment, highlighting the lasting impact Teesside University has had on his personal and professional journey. He said the afternoon was "incredibly nostalgic" and that it was wonderful to see how the University had changed and grown over the past three decades.

Dimitri Nicolaou, Associate Dean in the School of Computing, Engineering & Digital Technologies, said: "We were delighted to welcome Mayor Manzoor Hussain, a Teesside graduate from the Class of 1993, back to the University. His visit provided an opportunity to showcase our facilities, including the cutting-edge Digital Life Building and BIOS, and to discuss the important role universities play in developing talent, supporting innovation, and creating opportunities for communities across the UK. We are immensely proud of his achievements and the positive impact he continues to make through public service."

His visit served as an inspiring reminder of the achievements of Teesside graduates and the diverse paths they take after leaving the University.
