2024 Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships

Teesside University welcomes expressions of interest from outstanding early career researchers wishing to apply for a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship with Teesside University as their host organisation.

The final deadline for Expressions of Interest is 5.00pm on Friday 12 January 2024.

About the scheme

The aim of the Early Career Fellowships scheme is to enable early-career researchers with a research record to undertake a significant programme of high quality research that represents a more-than-incremental elaboration on their doctoral project.

Eligibility

Applicants must carefully make sure they meet ALL of the scheme’s eligibility requirements in the detailed guidance. In summary, to be eligible for the scheme applicants must:

• have a doctorate at the time of starting the Fellowship or have submitted their doctoral thesis for viva voce examination by 4.00pm on the 22 February 2024
• have undertaken their viva voce examination after 22nd February 2020*
• have a degree (any degree) from a UK higher education institution at the time of starting the fellowship or hold an academic position in the UK (e.g. fixed-term lectureship/fellowship) that commenced before the 22nd October 2023.

Candidates must not:

• have held a full-time permanent academic post in the UK or comparable UK institution
• have existing funding in place ? the duration of the Fellowship
• be registered for degrees, professional or vocational qualifications at the time of starting the fellowship
• currently or previously been a Principal Investigator on a 3 year-post doctoral research project or comparable position to pursue their own research.

*Applicants who have had a career break should present the case for interruption by a period of maternity leave, family commitments, illness, or other exceptional circumstances.

Applicants who formally submitted their doctoral thesis for viva voce examination between 22 February 2019 and 22 February 2020 are eligible to apply if their work has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic

Applicants should also note the funder’s belief that “the development of an academic career is best served by gaining experience at different institutions”; and that those “who have not already moved institutions in the course of their academic career... should nominate a new host university, or otherwise demonstrate clear evidence of the academic and/or personal reasons for remaining at the same university”.

Selected candidates will be supported in developing their application, leading up to the submission to the Leverhulme Trust by the scheme deadline of 22 February 2024. Expressions of interest should be submitted through the Leverhulme Trust ECR Fellowships 2024 form.

Submissions will be considered up until 5.00pm on Friday 12 January 2024, and applicants will be notified of decisions shortly thereafter.
