Teesside University academics join prestigious network of emerging leaders
Two academics from Teesside University have been appointed to the UK Young Academy, a national network comprising talented researchers, innovators and industry professionals.

The UK Young Academy (UKYA) identifies, connects and develops early-career professionals who are committed to making a real difference to the world and addressing societal issues through their work.
Professor Antonia Liguori and Dr Imrose Muhit from Teesside University are among the 32 newest members of the network, joining representatives from a wide range of sectors including policy, education and archaeology.
They were selected in recognition of the significant contributions they have made to their respective fields and their dedication to delivering impact.
As members, they will have the opportunity to collaborate with peers, exchange ideas, share expertise, contribute to strategic projects, influence policy and tackle challenges.
Professor Antonia Liguori, Professor of Participatory Storytelling and Public Policy within the School of Social Sciences, Humanities & Law, is proud to join such a prestigious network.
She said: “Personally and professionally, it is a joy and a real privilege to be part of such an inspiring and diverse community.
“All members of the UK Young Academy have a shared desire to do something meaningful and make a real difference by addressing the challenges our world is facing. “My academic work focuses on the power of stories and how we can utilise various participatory storytelling techniques to generate impact. Through the academy, I will continue to explore these areas alongside other members and experiment with new models of inter-sectoral collaboration.”
The academy’s rigorous and highly competitive selection process underscores the honour of being chosen as a member of this diverse cohort.
Dr Imrose Muhit, Lecturer in Engineering, whose main research interests include sustainability within construction and net-zero ambitions, said the appointment marks a significant milestone in his career.
He added: “I am proud that my passion for sustainability and achieving net-zero goals through collaborative efforts spanning industry and academia has been recognised through this appointment.
“The academy’s rigorous and highly competitive selection process underscores the honour of being chosen as a member of this diverse cohort.
“The challenges we face as a society are so unique that they cannot be overcome or solved solely from a single discipline or background.
“Through various major projects, I will collaborate with esteemed colleagues from various industries to address critical issues, advance interdisciplinary research, and champion innovative, long-lasting solutions that will positively impact society as a whole.”
The UKYA was launched by The Royal Society in partnership with seven senior partner academies across the country.
Teesside University is proud to be represented by two academics in the new cohort, highlighting the calibre of its early-career researchers.
Professor Liguori and Dr Muhit will be members of the academy for the next five years.
