After completing a psychology degree and discovering her passion for optics, Beth chose to study optometry to pursue a hands-on, people-focused career.
It is very hands on from the beginning, allowing us to put what we’ve learned in lectures into practice.
After completing a psychology degree in 2023, I didn’t know what I wanted my career to be. I returned to work as an optical advisor, and decided I wanted to develop professionally and become an optometrist. Teesside was a great choice for me as it’s not too far away, so I can live at home while studying and work weekends, which is highly beneficial.
I am highly interested in the clinical side of optics and have a strong desire to help people – becoming an optometrist allows me to do this.
It is very hands on from the beginning, allowing us to put what we’ve learned in lectures into practice. Returning to education, I was worried that I wouldn't fit in as much as the other students, but the course has individuals of all ages and different optical experience, which is also an advantage.
It’s a great place for learning. The library is well set out, and the Students' Union and Student Life building are welcoming, and have great food too.
I work as an optical advisor at Specsavers, and I have recently been chosen as course rep for optometry, which I am excited to start.
I hope to become a highly respected and professional optometrist and eventually specialise in an area of the field – possibly paediatric optometry or low vision.
I would definitely – the staff are all very helpful and no question is a silly question. If you are struggling, they are happy to talk you through things.
Research the course and read the prospectus. Once you know what you definitely would like to do, apply early on and give yourself plenty of time to complete the application and prepare for interviews.
