When Jazz met Marketing and Management: Tales from a Jazz Musician and Management Educator

Join Noel Dennis to explore how jazz music can inform marketing discourse and the wider field of management.

After fifteen years working in business schools, alongside a steady career as a jazz musician, Noel began to see the limitations of marketing discourse when applied to the arts, and specifically jazz music. As he developed his skills as an improviser and began playing some high profile gigs, Noel began thinking about how jazz can inform marketing and management.

Noel will discuss how iconic trumpeter and thought-leader Miles Davis continues to be a major influence on his professional practice – from metaphor, to leadership, to challenging the art vs. commerce debate. Additionally, Noel will explore how he has worked to bring the ‘art’ back into marketing through the creation of Art and the Market, a journal that has assisted in bringing together a global community of practice for arts marketing. Musical interludes may even accompany the discussion.
