Dr. Alison Innerd
Sport and Exercise (Senior Lecturer)

After completing a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science in 2008, Alison went on to complete her MSc in Sport and Exercise Science in 2009 and her PhD in 2014 at Teesside University. Prior to starting her current post, Alison worked as a Research Assistant in the School of Health and Social Care, working on an externally funded project. Alison's main research interests are in physical activity interventions, primarily in children and young people, focusing on methods to increase physical activity. Alison also has a keen interest in the measurement of physical activity, evaluation of interventions and physical fitness. Outside of University, Alison is a field hockey coach, coaching children from grassroots to regional level.

Abstract: Promoting Physical Activity in Primary Schoolchildren through ‘Active Classrooms’
The benefits of physical activity (PA) to children’s health are well established. However, in England only 21% of boys and 16% of girls meets the UK Chief Medical Officers’ recommendation of 60 min of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) per day (Health Survey for England, 2012), showing the need to explore different methods to increase daily PA in children. The school setting is an obvious choice for implementation of health promotion initiatives. A number of PA interventions have been implemented in schools to promote PA including: playground interventions, walking schemes and extra curriculum activities. However schools are under academic performance pressure which often results in Physical Education and PA time being reduced to allow time to meet the academic objectives. Therefore a key requirement for a successful PA intervention is the ability for the intervention to be integrated into the curriculum/classroom. This talk will explore different methods to promote PA in the classroom.
