Social Enterprise Seminar

17 August 2007

Social enterprise is a well established sector where not-for-profit organisations provide community and health related services. There is a considerable drive to extend their involvement in the provision of healthcare. In support of this, the School of Health & Social Care held a free seminar attended by commissioners and decision makers from local health and social care organisations.

The inspirational speakers were well received and included Karen Wood, Chief Executive (North East Social Enterprise Partnership), who gave a history and overview of social enterprise. Guy Turnbull, Community Interest Company & Economic Partnerships Ltd and VIVA, highlighted issues in relation to social enterprise and some inspiring, effective case studies.

Ewen Weir, Assistant Director (Commissioning) at Hartlepool Borough Council, discussed Connected Care in Owton and demonstrated how partnership working can have a community impact. Mike Smith, Regional Head of Business Development, NHS Direct, explained how his organisation had, diversified in response to external drivers. A lively panel discussion followed, with thought provoking questions. Participants said they found the seminar stimulating and helpful.

We will now be exploring how the University can build on this and offer support to individuals and groups in setting up social enterprises. Additional seminars and workshops on related themes are planned.
