Funding the voluntary sector after 2006

01 April 2007

The north is facing significant cuts in funding to the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) in 2006 due to the loss of European funding, the way the region is funded through the Regional Development Agency and One North East and also potential loss of lottery grants.

Dr Tony Chapman, Director of the Social Futures Institute has been researching the potential impact of cuts. He said "This research casts serious doubts on the preparedness of the VCS for change and suggests the general sense of optimism about sustainability may be misplaced. The report concludes: "An increased emphasis on the enterprising nature of the VCS rather than focusing on its 'independence' and different 'value system' may ultimately strengthen its position in the eyes of national, regional and local government."

The report also says there appears to be insufficient support offered to VCS organisations to engage in the tendering process so there's a need to invest in the education and training of officers who have responsibility for procurement so they will recognise the value of engaging the VCS in contract work.
