Chris gets on his bike for Olympic dream

06 August 2010

Design student Chris Green has devised a project to help visitors travel around the Stratford Olympic Village during the 2012 Olympics.

Chris, 22, from Gateshead, produced the Velo travel scheme for the final project of his MSc Design.

His suggested Velo creation would involve 15 docking stations in the Olympic Village with 35 electric bikes in each. UK and international visitors could sign up to the scheme beforehand, enabling them to travel around the East End village to different events and return their bikes to the docking station at the end of the day. Big ambitions Chris said: ‘I wanted to do something big and you can’t get any bigger than the 2012 Olympics.

‘I think it’s fantastic that they’re coming to the UK and bringing all kinds of development, not just tourism - it’ll be beneficial in so many arenas.

‘When researching for the project I looked at similar schemes around the world to see what was going right and what was going wrong. For example, I learned about a popular scheme in Barcelona where 30,000 people use 6,000 bikes.

‘I wanted to use the newer, environmentally-friendly technology of electric bikes for Velo and would love to see it taken up by the Olympics’ organisers.’

Chris is now aiming for a career in product design, with the car industry his ultimate aim.
